Asia Society corporate survey assesses effects of COVID-19 and anti-Asian sentiment on Asia-Pacific Americans in the workplace

Chevron and Medtronic are top employers overall for Asian Americans, survey finds

NEW YORK, NY; May 13, 2021—In an environment marked by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and rising anti-Asian sentiment in the United States, Asia Society’s new publication Asian Business Survey assesses the challenges and opportunities currently facing the Asia-Pacific American (APA) community in the workplace. While the survey highlights successful efforts by companies to prioritize diversity and inclusion, it also indicates that a significant number of survey respondents expect increased conversations about fairness are short-lived.

“The Asian Business Survey is particularly timely and important in light of the recent wave of anti-Asian racism in the United States,” said the Asia Society’s executive vice president. Tom Nagorsky. “The survey and our annual symposium include a review of business responses to COVID-19 and issues of racial equity and social justice that are critical to translating commitment into action.”

Now in its 12th year, the Asian Corporate Survey is a nationwide benchmarking study assessing the growth, development, and advancement of Asia-Pacific (APA) American employees at a range of Fortune 500 companies nationwide. .

The Asian Business Survey showcases the transformational work of companies that are succeeding in changing workplace culture and prioritizing diversity, inclusion and opportunity for Asian, Asian American and South Islander talent. Peaceful. Examples of how to improve critical conversations related to racial equity, subtle and overt bias, and racism are featured from award-winning companies.

At the same time, the Asian Business Survey highlights the need for targeted professional growth opportunities for APA employees, as well as the need for more action to address racial equity in the workplace.

A significant number of survey respondents indicated that they expected increased conversations about equity to be fleeting and were pessimistic about the prospects for meaningful action that would lead to real change. Nearly 30% believe their companies have not engaged APA employees enough in broader conversations about racial equity.
