Position summary:

physics review is an online publication of the American Physical Society (APS). We are looking for a talented science communicator to join their team as a full-time editor. Physics Magazine features authoritative news and commentary on research in the field of physics as a whole. The editor will be primarily responsible for identifying suitable articles for coverage, commissioning and editing commentaries, and writing and editing short research summaries. In this role, you will also work on writing and editing other types of articles, such as interviews, features and reports, and promote Physics Magazine via social media, lab visits and conferences. As the position evolves, you may be required to create and animate new sections of the publication and contribute to the strategic development of the magazine.

Is it you:

  • Work with a variety of professionals, including renowned scientists, illustrators, web developers, and APS staff.
  • Project management and organizational/operations lead to distill technical results into a clear and engaging message, while balancing numerous assignments and working to tight deadlines.
  • Daily writing and editing of articles on the physical sciences for a non-specialist audience.
  • Research, interview, and work regularly with commentary experts and formal science journalism/communications training.
  • Attend conferences, events, meetings, symposia and other work related duties as required.
  • Identify suitable articles for coverage, commission and edit commentaries, and write and edit short research summaries.
  • Writing and editing other types of articles, such as interviews, features and reports and to promote
    Physics Magazine via social media, lab visits and conferences.
  • Create and/or animate new sections of the publication and contribute to the strategic development of the magazine.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master of Science in Physics or related field required. PhD in Physics or related field preferred.

Experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Licence.
  • Master’s degree in physics or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in writing and/or editing articles on the physical sciences for a non-specialist audience.
  • Experience working with commentary experts and formal training in science journalism/communication preferred.
  • Experience in identifying suitable articles for coverage, commissioning and editing commentaries, and writing and editing short research summaries.
  • Extensive experience in writing and editing other types of articles, such as interviews, features and reports.
  • Experience in social media, lab visits and attending conferences.
  • Experience in developing new sections of publications.
  • Experience in strategic development.
  • Experience working with commentary experts and formal training in science journalism/communication would be a plus.
  • Exceptional communication skills.

  • Experience balancing numerous assignments and working under tight deadlines.

Travel: This position may require occasional office work, various geographic events and attendance at meetings as directed by your supervisor.
