Melplash Agricultural Society Gardening Contest

The MELPLASH Agricultural Society Annual Garden and Awards Competition is an opportunity for all gardeners in West Dorset to have their hard work in the garden recognised.

It is open to anyone who has a garden or housing estate within 12 miles of Melplash Village Church and is sponsored by Bridport-based William James & Co and Chedington Compost.

There are prizes for the best large, medium, small garden and the best housing estate. First, second and third prize and awarded in each category, as well as overall winner of the competition. The only condition is that the garden be designed and created by the participant. If a part-time helper is employed, it should not exceed eight hours per week.

The criteria to be judged will be:

• General condition of the garden or housing estate

• All regimes of interest/culture

• Quality of crops, flowers, plants

• Originality of the layout and planting

• Ingenuity to overcome local problems

• All special features

This year the judging takes place over two days on 16 and 17 June and the winners of each category will receive their cups and prizes at the Melplash Agricultural Show on Thursday 25 August. Registration closes Monday, June 6.
